Description
Tool that senses content in your web browser, allowing you to add it to your personal library. You can search for a preprint on arXiv.org, a journal article from JSTOR, a news story from the New York Times, or a book from your university library catalog. Zotero collects all your research in a single, searchable interface. You can add PDFs, images, audio and video files, snapshots of web pages, and really anything else. Zotero automatically indexes the full-text content of your library, enabling you to find exactly what you're looking for.

Why this is not on the all time best list? I can work without ms office, but not without Zotero...
Zotero is much more versatile tool than any other, it can be used for free and the best reference editor - and I have tried them all. The ability to tag and add notes, to have good filing sistem and great metadata importer, also with free export, and ability to use it with not-integrated pdf editor (PDF Exchange Editor is my fav). Btw, it is now only standalone edition that works with all browsers. And no, I am not payed to say this, just a big fan of the program :)
